Paint & Sip Sangria
First of all, huge shoutout to Royal Talens, for shipping me several sets of these pocketboxes for my upcoming sessions! They’re a great brand with dozens of wonderful art products, and I’m grateful to be working with them. Mika from A Paper Hat (our local art supply store) suggested I reach out to them in the first place, and it’s been a great experience so far! I love good people.
Here’s what you’ll get when you sign up for this Paint & Sip:
Watercolors
When you sign up for any of my sessions, you have the option to purchase my kit of supplies, which includes a set of 12 Van Gogh Watercolors, a set of 6 Princeton Brushes. These will last you well beyond any one event or series of classes. Hang on to them and play around! There are no “rules”. Mistakes are encouraged! Don’t worry about anything that happens or be skeptical because you have no art skills. The most important thing is that you have a great time, and learn a little bit.
The paint kit we’ll use is a handheld set of 12 colors from Van Gogh paints. This is my go-to brand! It’s a bit more expensive than your basic beginner set, but not even close to the most expensive stuff you can find. This set will last you a LONG time after this session.
If you ever get to the point where you’ve used all of your colors, it’s very easy to scoot on over to the art store and pick up a replacement half-pan or get a whole tube of the right color and squeeze enough out to refill your set. (The tubes are much more economical in the long run, and if you paint as much as I do, it only makes sense).
The plastic pocketbox case has six mixing wells for blending colors or isolating one hue that you might need to use a lot of. Maybe it’s your Madder Lake Deep and your Permanent Red Light for those strawberries & apples. Or maybe you’ll get into plein air painting & use a lot of Sap Green & Viridian. The possibilities are unlimited!
Here are the colors included:
Permanent Lemon Yellow
Permanent Red Light
Ultramarine Deep
Sap Green
Yellow Ochre
Azo Yellow Medium
Madder Lake Deep
Cerulean Blue
Viridian
Burnt Sienna
Payne’s Gray
Chinese White (in my opinion, this isn’t necessary. If you need a lighter version of a color, you can just dilute it with more water.)
Van Gogh has at least 72 different colors in their series, but this basic set of 12 covers a very wide range of possibilities.
You’ll also get a collapsible brush with this kit which is great if you’re on the go, but we’ll be using a set of larger brushes when we’re together.
Brushes
Princeton is my go-to brand here, and they’ve got many lines of brushes of various quality. This set has everything you’ll need for larger washes of color to extremely fine details.
3/4” Flat wash brush
1/2” Angle shader
#12 Round - for large washes
#6 Round - for getting into smaller details
#2 Liner - for details & outlines
#1 Round - for the finest of details.
With this set, you’ll be covered for just about anything you’ll want to render.
Bonus Detail
One of the things I like about the Van Gogh set is the swatch sheet it comes with.
Creating a swatch sheet like this is something I do with every single new set of watercolors I get. Pigments my vary from brand to brand. One Cerulean Blue may not be the same as another Cerulean Blue. It’s valuable just to know what your colors look like before you even start. I always fill my swatches with a gradient from fully opaque to transparent. This shows you what your color will look like at it’s most intense and most diluted. You may need both!
The Princeton Brushes that come with my kit are a great quality set to start off with. You’ll get dozens and dozens of paintings done before you need to replace any of these or decide to upgrade.
