As soon as I saw photos of @orange.house.cafe I couldn’t wait to draw it. First time I stepped in I chatted with @the.opti.mystic as she gushed about how it evoked childhood memories. This space is one of the few coffee/cafe spots with lots of seating, and maybe the only place with floral arrangements running across the ceiling. I love it. It sets a calm environment. A place where you can work, meet friends, get lunch, or just drop in for coffee - and you’ll have a great experience. Really happy this place is here now. AND it’s right where @theartgenerators are going to have their Sept 20 event!

Buy some flowers! 💐It’s always Mother’s Day somewhere! 🌻@gardenofedithfd is the latest shop drawing for Abiut Town SOMA volume 2 - and a South Orange NJ institution). You’ll know you’re at Garden of Edith if you can see the enormous exterior floral arch surrounding their whole shop.

South orange is top of my list for shops to draw this year. Keep your eyes peeled people. I’ll be out there.

🎂 I’m your go-to for all your celebration needs. Classic birthday cakes and treat platters down to the candles, plates and napkins! Everything I make is small batch and from scratch.

🎂Fun Fact - My name is Emily, not Izzy. (This is what happens when you name your business during the most stressful period of your life so far!) Then who’s Izzy you ask? It’s a nickname for my maiden name, Isovitsch, and in honor of all the men in my family, those Izzy’s, who, along with my mother, shaped my love for all things sweet.

Shopkeeper is the New Girl in the neighborhood. Corner Slice & Wheelhouse are mere one year olds as of this past weekend & their baby sister Shopkeeper is here to show you all the great gifts you can get. @sadiessouthorange isn’t a new shop, but it’s the latest from South Orange to make it into About Town SOMA v2 (due out in the fall - subscribe to my newsletter to learn more)

Cat Fisher, Sadie’s owner, has embedded herself in South Orange small business for years. She’s also co owner of @co_labsouthorange and @kitchenalamode and probably other shops that I have or have not yet drawn. She also a @heybigwig. Thanks for weaving a web of wonder in SOMA Cat!

Breakfast Club is a weekly meeting of local advertising & media people. It’s sort-of a networking event, but more of a hang out & meetup. Usually, I sit in on the chatter but this morning I deliberately set myself aside from it and gave my introverted tendencies some much needed attention.

I forget how much I like this. I say it a lot in classes & workshops but making art is inherently relaxing. I spend so much time having to be “on” and marketing myself. It’s been exhausting me and spiking my anxiety. I needed this.

James, who runs this chapter, was also thrilled by it. @arties_nj was also thrilled by it. I drew Artie’s years ago when they first opened, but this captures the vibe so much better. It’s become a meeting spot for many groups, and a 3rd space to work for dozens of regulars.

@townhalldeli invented the Sloppy Joe. This isn’t just legend and lore. It’s fact. Fun fact! This South Orange sandwich spot has so much history it’d be impossible to cram it into two pages of watercolor documentation. The walls are covered with 100 years of photos of customers. There are Easter eggs & ephemera everywhere. I say this a lot, but this is my new favorite place.

Van Gogh’s Ear cafe in Union in one of the coziest cafes around. No single chair matches any other chair, and I love that. Very eclectic and comfortable.

Pallet Brewery is exactly the kind of spot we needed here in Maplewood.

It’s been open for …not even a year yet? And it has been packed all the time (especially on trivia nights, which I keep forgetting are Thursdays, and can never find myself a seat). The trivia host is here in this painting, holding a wrestling title belt over one shoulder and a mic in one hand.

The Maplewood Bike Shed, in addition to being right around the corner from my house, is a great bike shop. Jose, the owner & chief mechanic, is a great dude. Years ago their founder, Danny Ives, lost his life in a tragic accident, and we’re all grateful they’ve kept his passion alive.
