As soon as I saw photos of @orange.house.cafe I couldn’t wait to draw it. First time I stepped in I chatted with @the.opti.mystic as she gushed about how it evoked childhood memories. This space is one of the few coffee/cafe spots with lots of seating, and maybe the only place with floral arrangements running across the ceiling. I love it. It sets a calm environment. A place where you can work, meet friends, get lunch, or just drop in for coffee - and you’ll have a great experience. Really happy this place is here now. AND it’s right where @theartgenerators are going to have their Sept 20 event!

Breakfast Club is a weekly meeting of local advertising & media people. It’s sort-of a networking event, but more of a hang out & meetup. Usually, I sit in on the chatter but this morning I deliberately set myself aside from it and gave my introverted tendencies some much needed attention.
I forget how much I like this. I say it a lot in classes & workshops but making art is inherently relaxing. I spend so much time having to be “on” and marketing myself. It’s been exhausting me and spiking my anxiety. I needed this.
James, who runs this chapter, was also thrilled by it. @arties_nj was also thrilled by it. I drew Artie’s years ago when they first opened, but this captures the vibe so much better. It’s become a meeting spot for many groups, and a 3rd space to work for dozens of regulars.

@townhalldeli invented the Sloppy Joe. This isn’t just legend and lore. It’s fact. Fun fact! This South Orange sandwich spot has so much history it’d be impossible to cram it into two pages of watercolor documentation. The walls are covered with 100 years of photos of customers. There are Easter eggs & ephemera everywhere. I say this a lot, but this is my new favorite place.

@Theablebaker has been a notable omission from my series of doodles of places to get a coffee or a cocktail and sit and chit chat. This is in part because there’s no where inside to sit. I’ve been casing the joint for weeks though, eyeballing this corner across from their table of pies and incomparable banana bread, wedged against a window between a cabinet of teas and a table of merch. Last week I finally found the time in the afternoon to awkwardly hover and pretend to be invisible for a good half hour, drawing as much as I could fit on two pages while avoiding being in the way as much as possible.
After finishing this drawing, I dropped some street cred with the owner @juliepauly by mentioning I’m old enough to remember when there WAS seating, and the entire place was half the size. The great intel that I got is that the outdoor seating will indeed be coming back this summer. 🎉huzzah🎉

Words bookstore is Maplewood’s cornerstone shop, with thousands of books in their selection, several events per week, and phenomenally deep knowledge of the book industry & local market. The Maplewood Bike Shed, in addition to being right around the corner from my house, is a great bike shop. Jose, the owner & chief mechanic, is a great dude. Years ago their founder, Danny Ives, lost his life in a tragic accident, and we’re all grateful they’ve kept his passion alive.

Pallet Brewery is exactly the kind of spot we needed here in Maplewood.

Omg @shrivers_salt_water_taffy is a paradise of sugar! ��🍦🍦🍡🍭🍭🍬🍬🍫Everything I was able to capture here barely does it justice. There could be a half dozen illustrations of this store from different spots inside it. The candy factory alone is impressive - and it’s not even in here! It’s hidden all the way at the back of the shop.
10/10, 5 stars, would draw again.
@mancoandmanco on the Ocean City NJ boardwalk is the kind of pizza shop every great boardwalk needs. Maybe even better than most. I mean look at that awning! You can stuff your face with pizza in the shade when it’s too hot or you can keep nice & dry if a sudden storm pops up. It just looks cool 😎 and I also love the typography in the sign. Cool font bro!
Legend has it that this place used to be called Mank & Marco - at least according to @maliarherman, just one of many SOMA people who call OC their summer vacation spot. Feel free to fill the rest of us in with any other local lore, studionumbernine fans!
