Uptown String Band
Last week I ran into @uptownstringband on the @oc_njboardwalk. This was an absolutely unintended highlight of the gig of drawing several OC spots for a client. This subset of the Mummers was 💯NOT on his list, but they literally popped up in front of me on the boardwalk as I began my evening drawing excursion .
Their captain was just announcing it was their last song and I thought to myself “Shit! I’ve only got five minutes to draw these guys! I absolutely have to!” Turns out it was just a two minute song. Oh noooooooo!! 😳😱
Then they started marching. And I started running. Backwards. While drawing. On the boardwalk. In a crowd. I was very very very inconspicuous. 🕵️♂️
Turns out I was not inconspicuous at all in this situation, and got to chat with the band afterrwards. As a former band nerd (I played trumpet) this was absolutely right up my alley. Also as a guy who dressed up like a firework just for funsies #VIVALOSMARCOS it was even more right up my spectacular alley.
The Mummers are iconic. I never ever thought I’d be in their presence, especially this closely, and this was awesome. This is a sketchy, quick, frenetic illustration, but it captures absolutely everything about this group. Definitely one of my top 10 experiences of 2025 so far.
